The skin stands as the largest organ in the human body which serves as a multilayered protective shield from the environment as well as a sensor and thermal regulator. However, despite being so important, many details regarding skin structure and function at the molecular level are incompletely understood. Recent advancements in liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) proteomics have allowed the quantification and characterization of the proteomes of several clinical samples, including normal and diseased skin.

A recent study reviewed the current state of the art in proteomic analysis of the skin and provided a brief overview of the technique and skin sample collection methodologies along with illustrating the utility of this strategy for a more widespread understanding of the pathology of diseases as well as new therapeutic options.

It explained that the proteomic studies of healthy skin and skin diseases can recognize potential molecular biomarkers which will help to improve diagnosis and patient stratification along with potential targets for drug development. Collectively, efforts like the Human Skinatlas deliver improved possibilities for improving clinical practice and patient outcomes.
